Antioxidant-rich · Filling · Ready in 5 minutes
This blueberry oat breakfast smoothie is the most satisfying, nourishing way to start a Pilates morning. Thick, creamy, and beautifully purple - it is packed with antioxidants, slow-release carbohydrates, and real staying power that carries you through your Pilates class and well into your afternoon. Breakfast in a glass has never looked this good or worked this hard.
What you eat before Pilates matters enormously - you need enough energy to perform at your best without feeling heavy or sluggish on the mat. This blueberry oat breakfast smoothie strikes that balance perfectly. It provides enough carbohydrates to fuel your session, enough protein and fat to stabilise your blood sugar, and enough volume to keep you comfortably satisfied without overfilling you. Blend it, sip it, and show up to class feeling energised and ready to move. Mel shares more pre-Pilates nutrition tips on the Pilates blog.
Rolled oats are a nutritional powerhouse that most people only think of as porridge. Blended into a smoothie, they provide beta-glucan - a unique soluble fibre that slows digestion dramatically, resulting in a long, sustained release of energy that keeps you fuelled throughout your entire Pilates session. Oats also contain B vitamins that support energy metabolism, and are one of the few plant foods that contain avenanthramides - antioxidants unique to oats that reduce inflammation and improve blood flow during exercise.
Blueberries are one of the most antioxidant-dense foods on the planet. Their deep purple colour comes from anthocyanins - pigments that have been extensively studied for their ability to reduce exercise-induced inflammation, support brain function and focus, improve circulation, and speed up post-workout recovery. Eating blueberries before or after a Pilates session gives your body a concentrated hit of protective compounds that work in your favour both during and after movement.

Ingredients
Method
Soak your oats (optional but recommended)
For the smoothest, creamiest result, soak the rolled oats in the oat milk for 5 to 10 minutes before blending. This softens them so they blend completely smooth without any grainy texture. If you are in a rush, skip this step and simply blend longer - most high-speed blenders will handle raw oats perfectly well and still give you a beautifully smooth blueberry oat breakfast smoothie in under a minute.
Blend until smooth
Add the oat milk and oats to your blender first, then add the frozen blueberries, frozen banana, almond butter, and honey if using. If adding protein powder, add it now. Blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds until completely smooth and a stunning deep purple colour. The frozen banana gives this smoothie its thick, creamy texture - it is what makes it feel more like a substantial breakfast than a thin juice.
Pour and enjoy
Pour into a tall glass and top with fresh blueberries and a sprinkle of chia seeds if you have them. Drink immediately for the best flavour and texture, ideally 30 to 45 minutes before your Pilates class as a pre-workout energy boost, or within 30 minutes after class as part of your recovery routine. Either way, your body will love it.
Mel's Tips ✨
Can I drink a blueberry oat breakfast smoothie before Pilates?
Yes - this blueberry oat breakfast smoothie is an excellent pre-Pilates option when consumed 30 to 45 minutes before your class. The oats provide slow-release carbohydrates for sustained energy, the blueberries add a quick hit of natural sugars for immediate fuel, and the almond butter provides healthy fats that slow digestion enough to keep you energised throughout your entire session. It is light enough to not cause discomfort during movement while substantial enough to genuinely fuel your performance on the mat.
Can I make this blueberry oat breakfast smoothie the night before?
You can blend this smoothie the night before and store it in a sealed jar or bottle in the fridge overnight. Give it a good shake before drinking as it will thicken and separate slightly. The oats will continue to absorb liquid overnight making it even thicker and creamier by morning - similar to overnight oats in texture. If it is too thick the next day, add a splash more oat milk and shake well. The blueberry colour will deepen overnight which actually makes it look even more beautiful.
Are rolled oats or quick oats better for this smoothie?
Rolled oats are the best choice for this blueberry oat breakfast smoothie because they blend more smoothly than steel-cut oats and provide a richer, creamier texture than instant or quick oats. Rolled oats also retain more of their fibre and nutritional value compared to quick oats which are more processed. If you only have quick oats they will work fine - they just blend a little faster and the texture may be slightly less creamy. Avoid steel-cut oats in smoothies as they do not blend smoothly even in high-speed blenders.
